The range of use of the type S thermocouples (Pt-PtRh10%) is between 500º C and 1,600 ºC. Depending on the operating temperature, different thermocouple wire diameters are mounted, the most typical being 0.5 mm, 0.4 mm, 0.35 mm, 0.30 mm, 0.25 mm and 0.20 mm. The higher the operating temperature the more recommendable it is to use larger wire diameters. The usual assembly of these types of thermocouples corresponds to an exterior ceramic protection structure, single or double, with different types of ceramic depending on the application and the operating temperature, and an electric connection using a standardised connection head. In some cases the interior ceramic protection and the exterior metal protection are combined with high temperature-resistant steels.
